PDF compression levels

Pick a level before dropping your file. If you pick nothing, High applies. The shown percentage is the size reduction the tool aims for — the exact result depends on your file.

LowHigh quality. A gentle ~20% squeeze for documents where every detail matters.
MedGood balance. Roughly halves the file (~50%) while keeping a clean look.
HighStrong default. Aims for ~75% smaller — the sweet spot for email and sharing.
MaxSmallest file. Pushes toward ~95% smaller; images may visibly lose detail.

How to compress a PDF?

Drag your file into the box above, click to select it, or paste it with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on Mac). Compression starts automatically: the tool re-encodes oversized images, rebuilds the document structure more efficiently, and hands you back the result with a clear name, for example invoice-compressed.pdf. Learn more in our step-by-step guide to compressing a PDF.

What makes a PDF heavy?

Almost always, images. High-resolution photos, scanned pages and screenshots embedded at full size can turn a few pages into tens of megabytes. Fonts add some weight too, while plain text and vector graphics are tiny by comparison. That is why two PDFs with the same page count can differ in size by a factor of a hundred — and why a good PDF compressor focuses on images first.

Reduce PDF file size for email

Email providers cap attachment sizes, and a 25 MB scan simply won't go through. With RayoPDF you can reduce PDF size to fit Gmail, Outlook or WhatsApp limits: the High level is a solid default for attachments, while Maximum squeezes hardest when every kilobyte counts.

Compress PDF without losing quality

Size and quality are a trade-off, and you control it. Low keeps high quality with a light touch; Medium balances both; Maximum prioritizes the smallest file. Either way, RayoPDF is designed to preserve text and vector content while reducing the size of image data — and your page count, order and orientation never change.

Why didn't my file shrink much?

Some PDFs have little left to give: text-only documents, files that are already optimized, or pages whose images are tiny to begin with. Small, transparent or print-calibrated images are deliberately left alone to avoid breaking the document. In that case RayoPDF hands you back the original file untouched — you will never receive a PDF heavier than the one you dropped in.

Compress scanned and large PDFs

Scanned pages are just photos of paper, so a large PDF full of scans is the ideal candidate: it typically shrinks a lot while staying perfectly usable. Files up to 300 MB are accepted, and everything still happens locally on your device.

Why RayoPDF is private

Most online tools upload your file to a server. RayoPDF does the whole job on your own device.

1Read locally. Your browser reads the file into its own memory.
2Compress locally. Images and structure are optimized on your device.
3Save locally. The result downloads straight to you.

No upload, no account, no file storage. Open your browser's network inspector while compressing and you'll see zero file transfers — that verifiable silence is the whole point. Read the details in our privacy policy.

Compress PDF on any device

RayoPDF works on desktop, tablet and mobile. On touch screens, tap the drop area or the Select PDF button to pick a file — drag & drop, click-to-select and paste all do the same thing: compress your PDF in seconds.

Frequently asked questions

Are my PDFs uploaded to a server?

No. All processing happens in your browser. Your files never leave your device.

How do I compress a PDF?

Drop your PDF into the box at the top of this page, click to select it, or paste it with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on Mac). Compression starts automatically and the smaller file downloads to your device.

Can I compress a PDF without losing quality?

Yes. Choose the Low level for a gentle squeeze that keeps high quality, or Medium for a good balance. RayoPDF is designed to preserve text and vector content while reducing the size of image data.

Why didn’t my PDF shrink much?

Text-only PDFs or files that are already optimized have little left to compress. The biggest savings come from large photos, screenshots and scanned pages. If nothing can be saved, RayoPDF hands you back the original file untouched.

Can I compress a large PDF?

Yes. Files up to 300 MB are accepted, and large scans or photo-heavy documents usually shrink the most.

What do Low, Medium, High and Maximum mean?

They set how hard the file is squeezed: Low keeps high quality with a gentle squeeze, Medium balances quality and size, High is the stronger default, and Maximum produces the smallest file. Pick one before dropping your PDF — if you pick nothing, High applies. See the compression levels above.

Can I compress a scanned PDF?

Yes. Scanned pages are images, so they usually compress very well. Medium or High levels work best for scans you still want to read comfortably.

Does RayoPDF work on mobile?

Yes. On phones and tablets, tap the drop area or the Select PDF button to pick a file. Everything else works exactly like on desktop.

Is RayoPDF free?

Yes, compressing PDFs with RayoPDF is free, with no watermarks added to your documents.

Do I need to create an account?

No. There is no registration, no login and nothing to install. Drop your PDF, download the result, done.
